What if intelligent life on Earth evolved not once, but twice? The octopus is the closest we will come to meeting an intelligent alien. ![]() ![]() ![]() What follows are some examples of spooky, scary, or weird events from the 1800s which became legendary. And it seems that every place on earth has some version of a 19th-century ghost story. Some of them, like legends of silent ghost trains gliding past startled witnesses on dark nights, was so common that it's impossible to pinpoint where or when the stories began. The 1800s spawned countless tales of ghosts and spirits and spooky events. ![]() Or perhaps some really weird things were actually happening and people simply recorded them accurately. Perhaps the 19th-century fascination with the otherworldly was a way to hold on to a superstitious past. Even a new technology was coupled with the public's interest in ghosts as "spirit photographs," clever fakes created by using double exposures, became popular novelty items. Yet in a century seemingly built on reason there arose a profound interest in the supernatural. The 19th century is generally remembered as a time of science and technology when the ideas of Charles Darwin and the telegraph of Samuel Morse changed the world forever. ![]() ![]() ![]() We lost Mum 25 years ago, she was just 51. Sequoia Nagamatsu’s Arctic plague is not a coronavirus (nor a respiratory / neurological disease), but its rapid spread and devastating effects make for uncomfortable reading nonetheless. ![]() Sound the klaxon, folks, I’ve finally read my first pandemic novel. I have always thought that teenagers in love, forbidden love and the likes are a bit overplayed at best and impractical in real life (alas, this is fantasy). I find some aspects of the story a bit trivial and annoying (teeny love stories are a bit overplayed to me in general). The number of characters in the circle itself, the description of some of the characters, the make-up of the families and the very motive behind how or why the circle was formed. As for the story, it is far different from the series in many ways. ![]() That is (in a sense) what the book is, however I believe with a different narrator it might have felt more than that. My only thought (slight problem really and it's just a personal thing) however is that the narrator though suited for this genre from the get go makes me think that this is a teeny romance novel. ![]() The narrator first and foremost is very much suited for this genre I must say, she did do a pretty fair job of the book itself. ![]() The series give you an idea of what the book itself is about but the stories are quite different in a lot of sense. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.ĭickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was a writer and social critic who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book isn’t overtly political, but every now and then Demon reveals he’s paying attention. Our conversation has been edited and condensed. Vance portrays Appalachia, about leaving home and coming back, and about the forgotten history of Appalachian progressivism. It’s a propulsive reading experience, energetic and funny while still conveying Kingsolver’s fury at the institutions that have let her community down. ![]() As the title suggests, it’s a backwoods twist on Dickens’ David Copperfield, starting from the opening sentence, “First, I got myself born.” Demon, né Damon, is a chatty, likeable orphan whose life gets caught up in the structural poverty and opioid epidemic that plagues rural America. Kingsolver’s new novel, Demon Copperhead, takes her back to Appalachia, where the author was raised and where, after decades away, she once again lives, on a farm in southwestern Virginia. ![]() It’s easy to dismiss her novels as middlebrow, but I’ve found the best of her work angry, engaged with politics, and alive to the natural world in ways that have only felt more relevant as tastes in fiction have evolved. Barbara Kingsolver has been writing about issues of social justice for decades, starting with her first novel, 1988’s The Bean Trees, set against the backdrop of immigrant life in Arizona. ![]() |
